Audi A4 A6 Multitronic auto transmission ECU

Audi A4 A6 Multitronic fault

Audi A4 A6 Multitronic gearbox transmission ECU (“PRNDS” light fault)

This Audi A4 A6 Multitronic Transmission ECU is very common for causing failure for all Audi 2001 - 2007 vehicles with Multitronic transmission/gearbox.

When this gearbox ECU becomes faulty, the P R N D S lights will flash on the display instead of just the “D” icon when driving. This will generally be your first indication that there is something wrong. As soon as the P R N D S lights begin flashing the vehicle will usually be forced into fail-safe mode and lose power.

Other common symptoms include a complete loss of reverse and drive, with the transmission not being able to move from the P position.

Scanning the vehicle with diagnostic equipment will often reveal a host of fault codes relating to faulty range, output and input sensors along with codes for solenoid and pressure control valve malfunction.

The main remedy to this Multitronic issue is to purchase a new transmission ECU from manufacturer: at a huge expense.

Our solution is far more cost-effective: we test and rebuild your own Multitronic transmission ECU in 2-3 working days, at a fraction of the cost of a replacement unit and provide a Lifetime warranty. After the rebuild this Audi gearbox ECU will just plug straight back into the gearbox with no need for programming afterwards.

Common faults:

  • P R N D S light flashing on dashboard
  • Gearbox in fail-safe mode / limp home mode
  • Loss of reverse gear
  • Complete loss of drive

Common fault codes:

  • P0706 17090 – Transmission Range Sensor (F125)
  • P1757 18165 – Supply Voltage Open Circuit
  • P0722 - Transmission Output Speed Sensor No Signal (G195)
  • P1793 18201 – Transmission Output Speed Sensor 2 (G196)
  • P1717 – Transmission Input Speed Sensor No Signal
  • P0750 – Shift Solenoid 1 (N88) Malfunction
  • P0753 – Shift Solenoid 1 (N88) Circuit Failure
  • P1813 – Pressure Control Valve 1 (N215) Electrical Malfunction
  • P1818 – Pressure Control Valve 2 (N216) Electrical Malfunction

Hi I have 07 A4 2.0tdi sline multitronic.PRNDS is lit up but not flashing on dash.I went down a hill in N then clicked into D at the junction at bottom of hill. I heard a metallic Clunk just the one and at that moment drive was gone. I have dtc codes relating to input and output sensors having no signal and after a reset on diagnostic the PRNDS will tell me which gear is selected but only once then it just lights up. Front wheels dont lock in P. Is this an ECU or mechanical fault. Please help.
ECU Admin says: 03/02/2020 10:50:01
Hi Scott, this sounds like a potential CVT ECU failure due to the fault codes for input and output sensors. Sending your transmission ECU for test and rebuild couldn’t be easier, just choose your part number from the above list or from here: https://www.ecutesting.com/product-catalogue/audi/a4/ecu-transmission/

Hi i got these codes on my transmission.. P1743 clutch slip:signal too much P1818 press ctrl valve2 Electrical error in circuit P1857 load signal:error message from engine contr.
ECU Admin says: 25/11/2019 11:47:11
Hi Cedric, the fault code P1818 – pressure control valve 2 (N216) electrical malfunction is common for a faulty Multitronic CVT transmission ECU. However you may have further issues on the vehicle causing both ‘signal’ fault codes to be stored. For prices and shipping information regarding the Multitronic rebuild please select your part number from the following list: https://www.ecutesting.com/product-catalogue/audi/a4/ecu-transmission/
David Pickford says: 01/10/2019 02:55:50
Hi, l have a 2007 build A4 sline 1.8T with the 7 speed auto. On occassions the PRNDS lights start flashing, on some occasions I can't select reverse but can always get Drive and can never use the "manual" mode. The car does not go into limp mode. Any thoughts on possible issues? Regards Dave
ECU Admin says: 01/10/2019 09:37:08
Hi David, does the vehicle log the same set of fault codes each time it fails? We can help with your Audi A4 transmission ECU just select your part number from the following list: https://www.ecutesting.com/product-catalogue/audi/a4/ecu-transmission/

Arno Teigseth says: 11/07/2019 23:08:25
1) how do I know whether my box is Multitronic or Tiptronic? 2) my box does not show PNDRS, but gearing is very jumpy between 1300 and 1600rpm aprox. Could this be ecu too?
ECU Admin says: 12/07/2019 10:22:35
Hi Arno, to know what system you have you will need to read the control unit ID via OBD II diagnostic using professional level diagnostic equipment, this will give you the part number from your gearbox control unit and the system type. You can then use the search function at the top of this page to search for your part number, this will give you information about the common fault, price and shipping information.
