BMW E39 ABS Module Repair

If your BMW E39 has an ABS light on and a wheel speed sensor code stored, it’s likely your ABS module is faulty and in need of repair. This isn’t unusual and failure is spread across two commonly-failing ABS modules fitted to the E39 (1995-2004).

BMW E39 ABS Pump & Module Repair

When failure strikes, affected owners will be left with unassisted braking as well as an illuminated ASC or DSC light. Scanning the vehicle diagnostically will usually uncover wheel speed sensor codes, or in BMW E39s with DSC, the defective ABS module may store pressure-sensor-related codes.

Thankfully though, we’re the experts at restoring full functionality to these control units in just 2-3 working days. Complete our test form to get started.

Which BMW E39 ABS module do I need a repair of?
As mentioned, BMW fitted two different ABS modules to their E39 model, and unfortunately, the pair of them fail frequently and require a repair.

It’s fairly unusual for the same model to run two different ABS units, however, the reason for this was to support the specific model’s stability system. In 1998, BMW began transitioning from ASC (automatic stability control) to DSC (dynamic stability control), and the E39 was very much a part of this development.

In short, DSC is a significant advancement of ASC. While ASC only monitors information from the wheel speed sensors to react to wheel spin, DSC consults a range of sensors to predict and mitigate wheel spin. This includes the steering angle sensor, yaw sensor and lateral acceleration sensor, hence why a more sophisticated ABS module was required.

The Bosch 5.7 accommodated this upgrade, which is why you tend to find it on post-2000 E39 models, and higher spec models like the 535 and 540.

When it comes to lower-spec E39s (520-530), it’s much more common to find the ASC-compliant Bosch 5.7 ASG. Ultimately though, understanding which BMW E39 ABS module you require a repair of, depends on whether your vehicle has ASC or DSC.

BMW E39 ABS pump & module fault explained
The reason these ABS units fail so frequently is due to an internal defect within the ABS module. This issue significantly hinders normal operation and interferes with the module’s ability to process WSS data and communicate via the CAN bus.

This is of course vital to both ASC and DSC functionality. As a precaution, your E39’s ABS module will disable features like ABS and ASC/DSC, meaning your BMW reverts to conventional braking until the unit has been repaired.

Inevitably, this also triggers the ABS and ASC/DSC warning lights to illuminate, signalling to the driver that these systems are no longer functional.

BMW E39 ABS pump & module fault: repair or replace?
When met with the aforementioned issues, many BMW E39 owners choose to simply replace their defective ABS module with a brand new one. However, this isn’t the most effective solution and we don’t recommend it.

Replacement pump and modules are subject to the very same issues. This is because a brand-new unit is exactly the same internally as your original, inevitably leading to the very same defect developing over time.

Instead, we recommend having your BMW E39’s ABS pump and module professionally remanufactured.

Our solution
When met with these symptoms, we’d always advise having the unit professionally tested to confirm the fault. We can do this for you using our bespoke hardware-in-the-loop testing rigs. This technology analyses your module under realistic operating conditions to pinpoint hard-to-find faults.

Having confirmed the internal malfunction, we’ll then remanufacture your E39’s control module with higher-than-OEM-standard components, going a step further than standard BMW ABS repair services. We don’t just replace the odd underperforming component to restore functionality, we’ll completely overhaul the module internally to provide long-lasting functionality.

Our solution costs much less than sourcing a replacement pump and module and you won’t need to recode the unit after we’ve rebuilt it. Most repair services provide only a short-term warranty (no more than a couple of years), however we cover all BMW E39 ABS modules rebuilt by us with an unlimited-mileage lifetime warranty.

Don’t just have your ABS pump and module repaired, have it remanufactured by the experts and keep your BMW E39 on the road for good. Fill out our test form to begin.

Hi there, I am in Australia, and have a problem with my 2003 BMW e39 525i ABS module/pump, the engine and abs light are on all the time. The scanner gives a fault code 015(return pump). My mechanic is convinced that it is the module fault. The local ABS repairer says the module is NOT reparable. I would like your opinion and possible cost if you could solve my dilemma. Thanking you in anticipation...Athos...The part No on the module is 3852240265900001

Hi Athos, you are welcome to send the ABS to us and we can see if it is repairable. That part number is not showing anything on our system, so I would advise to send a picture or any other part numbers on the ABS module to us to contact us just so we can double check this for you. Once we have confirmed this we can advise you on all costs. Thank you!

I have a 2002 e39 525. When I switch the car off , the abs module keeps running. You cannheat it under the hood. It drains the battery very fast. If I pull the 'switch' on the side it stops. I drive the car like that but noticed that the speedo and odo is dead. What is wrong with ABS Module. It shows no light on the dashboard. I am in South Africa. Kind regards

I have the 'trifecta' of brake fault code lights on the dash (2001 530d), which come on once 30mph is reached. After that it's ABS with every brake application which gets tiresome... I DON'T have the speedo issue or wheel speed sensor codes though, only the Pressure-related code. Is this still a failed ABS Module possibility ? Thanks.
ECU Admin says: 07/06/2022 10:51:47
Hi, we have certainly seen this type of module cause and store faults for brake pressure sensor, which is often caused by a fault within the module

Hi Mine is 525i bmw and i have code 32 for front rh wheel speed sensor. I already replace the speed sensor and fault lights still stays on the dash. Do another scan and it shows code 95 and says CAN network failed. I checked the circuit integrity for that frnt rh sensor to the module and its ok. Would be a faulty module. Im at Western Australia and want to fix this module. How much would it cost and how long. Thanks
